Snakebite
Peering down from amidst a vast ocean of blue, the radiant sun bathed the land in a pleasant glow. In response to the positive energy that seemed to be swirling through the air, a little girl's laughter rang out across the vast, open fields reaching the edge of a dense forest. Neither sun nor laughter seemed able to penetrate the deep thicket and nothing ever seemed to emerge from such a dark place.
The laughter originated with from a stout young girl who was no older then about five years old. She wore a sleeveless jacket which was slightly too large for her and a deep blue hat that was designed to be worn by a teenager and thus often fell over her eyes. Alongside the smiling girl was a small orange and black pig who trotted alongside the girl and seemed to prance with much jubilation whenever it noticed the girl's deep blue eyes.
"Firepaw," The girl began, "What do you wanna do today?"
"Tepig!" Firepaw cried cheerfully before running around the girl in a circle.
Akira- for that was the name of smiling young girl- laughed with much jubilation as her companion seemed to bask in the radiant sunlight. The pair walked through the sunlight; each making the other laugh frequently. It was only when they both plunged into an almost unnatural darkness that the laughter finally ceased.
Akira looked up to see what was causing the great shadow and almost fainted with surprise when she saw the owner of the shadow. It was a forest, so deep and thick that sunlight seemed to never cross its boundaries- raising the question of how the plants where able to survive and even thrive in such a place that was devoid of light. If she had been taught anything it was certainly that she should never step foot in this forest. Despite her burning curiosity, Akira knew the words of her elders well and was not about to disregard their teachings.
"Firepaw, I don't think we should go in there," Akira whispered, "I think we should go home."
However, the Tepig had not quite realised that Akira was no longer playing a game with it. Disturbed by its trainer's silence and lack of joy, the small fire pig leapt up and knocked Akira to the floor. As it did so, Akira's hat fell from her head and landed softly on the ground. Firepaw smiled brightly before snatching the hat in its mouth and darting into the forest.
"Firepaw, No!" Akira screamed after her companion.
Abandoning all the warnings that she had received throughout her life, Akira raced into the forest in pursuit of Firepaw.
The forest was even darker inside than Akira had expected. Her run had slowed into a walk and her wide, blue eyes darted around rapidly to locate any dangers that may be lurking. The small girl tried calling out to her partner but it was of no avail. Scared, the girl jumped at every sound including the sounds of her own feet snapping the dried twigs on the cluttered forest floor. As she walked, branches snatched at her and clawed at her; opening small wounds in her exposed arms. Twigs groped at her hair and on many occasions she had to stop and free herself.
Finally, the trees seemed to part slightly and Akira entered a dark clearing. She looked up and noted that the thick canopy was doing an excellent job of barricading the clearing in defence against the sun. Nervously, the girl stepped into the clearing and slowly made her way to the centre. As she placed a foot in the centre of the clearing, a twig snapped loudly from behind her. She spun but saw nothing save the inky darkness.
More twigs and rustles could be heard from all around her and the girl finally succumbed to terror. Crouching down, the little girl grabbed her knees and tucked them into her chest. Once in the position, Akira began to cry loudly for her parents. In response to the crying a faint whisper could be heard amongst the trees. Steeling herself, the girl stood and looked for the source of the whisper. Then she heard the hissing.
It seemed to cut through the forest- an angry knife of sound that seemed to grow in anger with each passing second. Finally, a small shape began hurtling towards the clearing and Akira recognised it instantly. It was Firepaw.
Firepaw flew through the air and smashed into the branch of a nearby tree. Upon impact, the branch snapped and fell to the floor; pinning the Tepig to the dark ground. Akira's hat floated gently down and landed upon the ailing Firepaw.
"Firepaw!" Akira cried and darted towards her companion.
Suddenly, a dark shape appeared and blocked her path. As it slithered towards her, bright splotches of yellow could be seen adorning its deep black body. Its eyes flashed open, a deep crimson red; as deep red as the dangerous fangs which protruded from its wicked maw.
"Seviper," The creature hissed.
As if on cue, more Seviper slid out from the darkness of the forest; surrounding the poor little girl. Akira tried to run but was swatted back by a tail which glowed faintly purple. The girl fell to the floor; shivers writhing through her body. She looked up and saw a silhouetted figure standing beside the trapped Tepig. The figure turned and began to walk towards Akira.
"Help... me..." she whispered before losing consciousness.

The sun shone gently through the window; its delicate fingers playing with the hair of the sleeping girl. Akira awoke- her eyes slowly opening. She looked up to see a pure white ceiling that was segregated by gentle yet bright lights. Slowly, the child sat up and looked into the smiling face of a nurse.
"Good morning, sleepy," The nurse smiled, "Do you know where you are?"
"Where's Firepaw!" Akira shouted, realisation slamming into her like a wave.
As the girl sat up, a jolt of pain coursed through her.
"Take it easy," The nurse reprimanded softly, "Your Tepig is fine; he's being looked after next door. You should be more concerned about yourself; you took quite a heavy dose of poison."
"What happened," Akira asked, lying back down.
"I believe you were attacked by a group of Seviper in the forest. A man saw you and brought you here but not before they managed to attack you. What were you doing there anyway?"
"Firepaw wanted to play in there even though I told him not to," Akira replied, ashen faced, "I'm sorry."
"Well so long as you're both fine I guess no harm has really been done."
The door opened and another nurse entered wheeling a trolley. On top of that trolley sat a small orange and black pig who dutifully held a deep blue hat in his mouth.
"Firepaw!" The girl cried in jubilation.
"Tepig!" Firepaw replied after placing Akira's hat on the edge of her bed.
Firepaw leapt off the trolley and landed on Akira who winced in pain. Smiling though the pain, the girl hugged her faithful companion.
"I am glad she is okay," A male voice from the door said.
As Akira looked up at the entrance, the visitor- her saviour- had already left. All Akira saw was a small, crinkled, yellow tail disappearing through the doorway.
Here is a short fan-fiction based on MegMewMew's fan-fiction. It features a young Akira getting into trouble and shenanigans.
